HC Deb 11 April 1962 vol 657 cc1295-6
1. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware of the danger to the public caused by the change in the stopping place of buses numbers 11, 24, 39 and 134 from the end of Whitehall to a place near the Cenotaph, Scotland Yard and Richmond Mews and if he will take steps to have the stop restored to its former stand.

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Ernest Marples)

If the hon. and learned Member will let me know why he thinks the change dangerous I will ask the Metropolitan Traffic Commissioner to look into the matter.

Mr. Hughes

I will let the right hon. Gentleman know by way of a supplementary question. Does he realise that, grouped together just there, are twenty-two bus stops within a few hundred yards of each other, collecting crowds and thereby creating a danger to the public; that many of the bus stops are in the dangerously narrow neck between the Cenotaph, Grindlay's Bank and Scotland Yard, and that there is ample space for the Minister to find a comprehensive bus stop which would not be a danger to the public —[Interruption.] —but would serve the public very much better than the present bad arrangements? I say that notwithstanding the rude interruptions of hon. Members opposite.

Mr. Marples

I will look carefully at the supplementary question which the hon. and learned Member has asked. I hope that he is not injured between Grindlay's Bank and Scotland Yard.
