HC Deb 23 March 1961 vol 637 c553
8. Mr. Rankin

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many rhinoceroses were imported into this country for zoos under Government licences in 1959 and 1960.

Mr. Vane

My right hon. Friend is not concerned with rhinoceroses.

Mr. Rankin

I am sorry to hear that, in view of the fact that he is concerned with the importation of other forms of wild life into this country. In view of the blundering acts of one of his colleagues, will not he try to extend his activities to cover rhinoceroses?

Mr. Vane

I can set the hon. Member's mind at rest. No rhinoceros-borne diseases are a serious hazard to our own livestock. Hence the rhinoceros comes under a different category from the other animals about which the hon. Member asked Questions recently.
