HC Deb 23 March 1961 vol 637 cc578-9
47. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Prime Minister if he will now appoint a Minister of Sport; and if he will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

No, Sir. But the Government are considering as effective but less spectacular ways and means of helping sport.

Mr. Hughes

In view of welcome novelties such as Russian horses in the Grand National, does not the Prime Minister agree that every effort should be made to keep up Britain's score in sport, as in politics and economics, as other nations are doing?

The Prime Minister

Yes, and the question could not have been asked by anyone better than the hon. and learned Gentleman, who has the honour of having ridden a horse fifth in the Grand National.
