HC Deb 21 March 1961 vol 637 c193
24. Mr. Leather

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what support he proposes to give in the coming year to Voluntary Service Overseas, either by way of grant from Colonial Development and Welfare funds, or other means.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Hugh Fraser)

As stated by my right hon. Friends the Prime Minister and the Leader of the House in replies to earlier Question, Her Majesty's Government are always prepared to consider further assistance to organisations of this kind. Any assistance furnished by Her Majesty's Government will depend on the nature of such requests for help as may be received.

Mr. Leather

Is my hon. Friend aware that many of us feel that organisations such as this yield an exceptionally high dividend, both in human understanding and in good will, especially in the underdeveloped territories of the Commonwealth? Can he assure the House that the Colonial Office will study these needs very carefully, and meet them if it can?

Mr. Fraser

Yes, certainly.
