HC Deb 07 March 1961 vol 636 cc251-2
40. Mr. Fell

asked the Prime Minister whether he is satisfied with the current operation of his policy of interdependence of Great Britain and the United States of America; and if he will make a statement.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Harold Macmillan)

The policy of interdependence which I set out some years ago was intended to cover co-operation, in various fields, not only between Britain and the United States, but between all the nations of the Free World. While much remains to be done, much has already been achieved.

Mr. Fell

While thanking my right hon. Friend for that illuminating Answer, may I ask whether he would not agree that consultation is absolutely essential if inter-dependence between the United States of America and ourselves is to work? Has there been consultation between President Kennedy and my right hon. Friend on matters concerning American policy with regard to Colonies in Africa and also in regard to the United States attitude towards the Congo?

The Prime Minister

Of course, there are close consultations through diplomatic channels at various levels on all these matters. I am also hoping to discuss them personally with the President in a very few weeks' time.
