§ 37. Miss Herbisonasked the President of the Board of Trade what new industrial enterprises planned for Lanarkshire are likely to be in production by 1962; what is the estimated increase in employment these new enterprises will produce; and what proportion of the new jobs provided will be for youths under 18 years of age.
§ Mr. N. MacphersonTwenty-one, including eleven expansions, to provide 4,530 jobs.
§ Miss HerbisonIs the Minister aware that the figure which he has just given will not cope in any way with the number of unemployed and particularly with 250 the increase in those who are leaving school? Further, is he aware that the complacency which he has shown in answer to all Questions today, particularly supplementary questions, is not shared in Scotland by responsible people, youth employment officers, teachers or industrialists? Will the hon. Gentleman do something worth while to bring work to where it is most needed?
§ Mr. MacphersonWe are frequently called upon for leadership. To show pessimism would be the worst form of leadership. I am optimistic about the future, and I believe that, by and large, the Press in Scotland reflects that optimism.
