HC Deb 07 March 1961 vol 636 c230
8. Mr. Grey

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many of the 14,500 jobs promised for the County of Durham during the next few years will be made available within the exchange area of the Durham constituency.

Mr. N. Macpherson

About 780.

Mr. Grey

Is the hon. Gentleman aware of the general feeling in my constituency that there is more uncertainty now than there has been since 1945 and that the working of the Local Employment Act is not to our advantage at all? How many years will it be before these new jobs are taken up?

Mr. Macpherson

I am afraid I could not give a definite answer to the last part of that supplementary question. It might be two, three or four years, but during that period, of course, more jobs should be developing. One has to have regard to expansion as well as to new industry coming in.
