HC Deb 02 March 1961 vol 635 cc1746-7
40. Mrs. Castle

asked the Prime Minister what approaches he has had from the President of the United States of America with regard to the cancellation of the Polaris missile base at Holy Loch.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Harold Macmillan)

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for Don Valley (Mr. Kelley) on 23rd February.

Mrs. Castle

Is not the truth of this matter that President Kennedy is perfectly willing to cancel this base which is a matter of convenience and not necessity to the United States forces, but that the Prime Minister will not allow him because he asked for it in the first place and is now afraid that its withdrawal would be a blow to his prestige? Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that we are all getting tired of Government by "MacVanity"?

The Prime Minister

No, Sir. I understand the submarine is on its way and will make use of these facilities.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

In view of the unsatisfactory nature of that reply, I beg to give notice that I shall raise the question on the Adjournment.
