§ 5. Mr. Elwyn Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations how many posts in Commonwealth universities have been taken up in accordance with the undertakings given in paragraph 13 of the White Paper on Commonwealth Educational Co-operation, Command Paper No. 1032, May, 1960.
§ Mr. BraineThe candidate selected for appointment to the first post to be filled under the scheme is expected to take up his duties at the beginning of the academic year 1961–62. Recruitment for five other posts which have been approved is proceeding.
§ Mr. Elwyn JonesCan the Under-Secretary of State say whether any steps are being taken to facilitate the re-entry of university teachers into the English university world when they return from overseas? Is not difficulty about that re-entry one of the factors limiting the success of this attempted recruitment campaign?
§ Mr. BraineThat, of course, is another question. I do appreciate that it is an important one, and I will undertake to have that looked into.
§ Mr. G. M. ThomsonIs the hon. Gentleman trying to arrange with the university authorities in this country a code of secondment similar to the one 1730 he is recommending to local education authorities?
§ Mr. BraineI would rather not give an answer to that question right now, but, as I say, I will bear that one very much in mind.
