HC Deb 28 February 1961 vol 635 c1362
31. Mr. Edelman

asked the President of the Board of Trade when he proposes to visit Coventry in order to discuss the present state of the motor industry.

Mr. N. Macpherson

My right hon. Friend has no plans at present to visit Coventry for such discussions.

Mr. Edelman

Will the Minister convey to the President of the Board of Trade that if he comes to Coventry he may be assured of an extremely warm welcome? Is the Minister aware that among the questions which the members of the Coventry district committee of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions would like to put to him is how he reconciles threatened mass redundancy at Messrs. Rootes with the proposed expansion of the industry elsewhere?

Mr. Macpherson

I am sure my right hon. Friend will appreciate and enjoy the warm welcome, but he takes the view that it is better to engage in conversations in the motor industry on a national rather than on a local scale.
