HC Deb 28 February 1961 vol 635 cc1373-4
47. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Prime Minister whether the speech of the Lord Privy Seal at Glasgow on 20th February on the question of Polaris represents the policy of Her Majesty's Government.

The Prime Minister

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Hughes

Is the Prime Minister aware that this meeting addressed by the Lord Privy Seal was a comparatively small affair, but that big demonstrations against Polaris were held in Glasgow? In view of the statement in yesterday's issue of The Times that Mr. Harriman is here to inquire into the state of public opinion in this country, will the right hon. Gentleman advise Mr. Harriman to go to Scotland to interview the Scottish Trades Union Congress, Glasgow Corporation and the very many representative bodies which are strongly opposed to the establishment of this base in Scotland?

The Prime Minister

Of course I am aware that there are objectors to this project, but on the whole it is a fair conclusion to say that the country as a whole approves.
