HC Deb 28 February 1961 vol 635 cc1358-9
24. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will announce his further plans to attract to Aberdeen new industries and to expand existing industries there, in order to stop the drift of workers away from the city and county of Aberdeen; and how far he has exercised in Aberdeen city and county his powers under the Local Employment Act to build new factories in Aberdeen.

Mr. N. Macpherson

I have nothing to add to the answer my right hon. Friend gave to the hon. and learned Member on 2nd February.

Mr. Hughes

As a Scot, does not the Minister realise that Aberdeen has a great variety of factories, hundreds of skilled workers ready and willing to make accessories to fit into the heavy industries of the South? Is it not time that he formulated a plan which would co-ordinate the industries of the whole of Scotland, north and south? Will he consider that?

Mr. Macpherson

I am well aware of that, and my right hon. Friend is doing his best to bring industry to Scotland, including Aberdeen.
