§ 24. Mr. Zilliacusasked the Lord Privy Seal whether Her Majesty's Government continue to recognise that, as they stated in reply to Questions from the right hon. Member for Easington (Mr. Shinwell) on 4th February, 1955, and from the hon. Member for Manchester, Gorton, on 497 15th February, 1956, the Chinese coastal islands of Matsu and Quemoy form part of the territory of the People's Republic of China.
§ Mr. ZilliacusIn view of that reply and in view of the fact that the Defence White Paper now mentions China as a potential enemy, will the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that in no circumstances will the Government allow themselves to be committed to war by the United States or anybody else in order to keep Chiang Kai-shek in the Chinese coastal islands?
