§ 20. Sir B. Jannerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much money has been stolen from banks, stores, messengers, and others during each of the past three years in cases known to the police; how much has been recovered; and in how many cases arrests have been made.
§ Mr. RentonThis information is not available. There is some information respecting the Metropolitan Police District in the annual reports of the Commissioner of Police which may assist the hon. Member, and I will write to him about this.
§ Sir B. JannerIs the hon. and learned Gentleman satisfied that the steps he is now taking to add to the police force are sufficient to cope with the situation which, in respect of the matters I have rasied, is a very serious one?
§ Mr. RentonWith respect to the hon. Gentleman, I do not think that that matter arises directly out of his Question, but I can assure him that this problem to which he refers is one which engages the very serious attention of the Commissioner, and he is doing all he can to meet it.
