HC Deb 14 February 1961 vol 634 cc1237-8
51. Mr. E. Fletcher

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will ask the Jenkins Committee on company law to make an interim report on legislation concerning take-over bids.

Mr. N. Macpherson

No, Sir. Takeover bids are only one aspect of the relationship between directors and shareholders which the Committee has under review.

Mr. Fletcher

Does not the Minister realise that they are a very important aspect and one which is causing very great public concern today? Does he not consider that it would be very useful, therefore, if the Jenkins Committee were asked to make an interim report on the subject as a matter of urgency?

Mr. Macpherson

No, Sir. There are very many questions of urgency being considered by the Jenkins Committee, and my right hon. Friend does not wish to interrupt its consideration of these problems by giving it the task of making a particular interim report.
