HC Deb 07 February 1961 vol 634 cc194-5
13. Mr. Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what representations he has received from religious and other leaders and bodies in British Guiana about the proposed transfer to the Government of the Colony of fifty-one denominational schools.

Mr. H. Fraser

Representations have reached my right hon. Friend from the British Guiana Christian Social Council, the Methodist Church in British Guiana and the leader of the National Labour Front protesting against the intention of the British Guiana Government to assume control over fifty-one aided denominational primary schools built on church lands entirely out of public funds.

Mr. Biggs-Davison

Whatever the result of those representations and whatever final decision may be come to in British Guiana, is it the understanding of my hon. Friend that facilities will continue to exist for the religious education of the children in these schools?

Mr. Fraser

Yes, Sir. Religious instruction according to the denomination of the school concerned will be continued in the fifty-one schools to be taken over.
