HC Deb 18 December 1961 vol 651 cc922-3
17. Mr. Roy Jenkins

asked the Minister of Labour why a new sub-employment exchange has been opened at Church Hall, Common Lane, Birmingham, 8, which is only 100 yards from the existing main employment exchange.

Mr. Green

Because of the present number of temporarily stopped workers, it has been found necessary to provide these additional premises for the time being.

Mr. Jenkins

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether this is a permanent arrangement? As I understand, the temporary arrangement which has been used at periods of great short-time working is now being put on a permanent basis and this is causing grave local concern about the prospects in the three factories in the area concerned.

Mr. Green

Perhaps the hon. Member would like to have a further look at the Answer which I have given him. I must stress that this move was taken to meet current needs only.

Mr. Jenkins

It was temporary?

Mr. Green

Yes, temporary.
