HC Deb 19 April 1961 vol 638 cc1158-9
36. Mr. Hilton

asked the Postmaster-General if he will consider compiling and publishing a separate telephone directory for the county of Norfolk to operate from 1962.

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Miss Mervyn Pike)

My right hon. Friend is considering this proposal, although he sees some difficulties in it. He will write to the hon. Member and to other hon. Members who have raised this question as soon as his examination is completed.

Mr. Hilton

I am grateful to the hon. Lady for that reply in that she says she is going into this matter, but is she aware that at present Norfolk is served by four different telephone directories covering Ipswich, Peterborough, Cambridge and Norwich? In my own area we are supplied with a directory covering the Cambridge area. I can get calls from Bishops Stortford and places 80 miles distant, but in the other direction, for local calls to only six miles away, we have to dial "Inquiries" and ask for the number. Will the hon. Lady bear this sort of thing in mind and consider that really in 1961 this is a stupid state of affairs? I hope that she will be able to help us in this connection.

Miss Pike

We recognise the difficulties and are looking very closely into this matter.
