HC Deb 17 April 1961 vol 638 c772
12. Mr. Prentice

asked the Minister of Labour if he will make a statement on the Government's policy towards the recent Recommendation No. 112 of the International Labour Organisation concerning occupational health services in places of employment.

Mr. Hare

I would refer the hon. Member to the White Paper, Cmnd. 1318, which was laid before the House on 23rd March.

Mr. Prentice

Will the hon. Gentleman acknowledge that the views which have often been expressed from this side of the House in favour of a comprehensive health service for industry are now supported by the recommendation of the I.L.O.? However, these ideas can be carried into effect only by a much more positive attitude on the part of the Government than that contained in the White Paper. Can he also tell the House, if he still relies on a voluntary approach, how long he thinks it will be before industry is effectively covered by occupational health services?

Mr. Hare

The hon. Gentleman will not expect me to agree with what he has said. I think that our present approach is the better one. The recommendation provides for the voluntary and progressive development of occupational health services. As he knows, a great deal is being done, and I hope that a great deal more will be done. I am quite convinced that we are on the right lines and are making the progress we need to make.
