HC Deb 13 April 1961 vol 638 c471
20. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has yet completed his consideration of the Report of the Tucker Committee, Command Paper No. 9150; and when he now plans to implement its recommendations.

Mr. Vosper

I regret that I am unable to add anything to the reply which my right hon. Friend gave to the right hon. Member for Bassetlaw (Mr. Bellenger) on 16th February.

Mr. Hughes

Does the right hon. Gentleman agree as a matter of practice that, when the nation is put to the expense and trouble of an inquiry of this kind by learned and distinguished persons, it would be a good idea to have the Report promptly instead of with the delays which have been characteristic of this Government, in one case amounting to ten years?

Mr. Vosper

I should not like the hon. and learned Member to take that view of the Tucker Report. Other proposals have been made in this respect and they will all be considered together. It is, as he will understand, a difficult issue.
