HC Deb 07 November 1960 vol 629 cc623-4
4. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Labour what is the latest total of unemployed in the London area; and what three exchanges in the London area have the largest number of registered unemployed.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Peter Thomas)

36,339 on 10th October. The answer to the second part of the Question is: Brook Green, Brixton and Edgware Road Employment Exchanges.

Mr. Lipton

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say what the figures are for each of the three exchanges to which he has referred and why they are so high, taken as a percentage of the working population, in each of the three districts covered by those exchanges?

Mr. Thomas

I can give the hon. Member the figures: Brook Green, 2,015 registered unemployed; Brixton, 1,581; Edgware Road, 1,564. I regret that I cannot give him any percentages, but it should be interesting to note that in Brixton in October, 1959, the figure was 2,207 and in the Greater London area there are twice the number of notified vacancies as there are registered unemployed.
