HC Deb 07 November 1960 vol 629 cc638-9
27. Mr. Tilney

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will consider appointing a commission to look into the possibilities of reclaiming the large area of the Dee estuary lying between the coasts of Wirral and North Wales.

Mr. Vane

I understand that the possibility of reclaiming parts of the Dee estuary has been considered in the past. Our investigations of the proposals put to us so far have shown that the results would not be economic on agricultural grounds. If my hon. Friend has any further suggestions, we will gladly look at them.

Mr. Tilney

Has my hon. Friend considered discussing this matter with the Institute of Hydraulics? Would he agree that land for both urban and industrial development is in very short supply in the North-West of England? Would he not also consider the transport amelioration that might come from such a scheme both in North Wales and in the Wirral?

Mr. Vane

The first thing would be to discuss it with my right hon. Friend.
