HC Deb 30 May 1960 vol 624 cc967-8
3. Mr. Morris

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is aware that specially formulated milk substitutes for veal production are being imported into this country; and whether he will consult with the Minister of Health as to the need for an investigation to safeguard the health of the public against any possible harmful effects.

Mr. John Hare

I am aware that certain proprietary milk substitutes are being distributed in this country for use in the rearing of calves for veal, and would refer the hon. Member to the answers which I gave to the hon. Member for Wood Green (Mrs. Butler) and my hon. Friend the Member for Gillingham (Mr. Burden) on 16th May. I am in touch with my right hon. Friend the Minister of Health about any possible effects on the consumers of the veal, although there is no reason to suppose that these effects are harmful.

Mr. Morris

While thanking the Minister for his reply, may I ask whether he is aware that these substitutes, including Kalomelk, have completely revolutionised veal production in Holland and that last year over half the calves reared for veal were reared on this commodity. Will he keep a constant watch on the situation?

Mr. Hare

I certainly will.
