HC Deb 16 May 1960 vol 623 cc887-8
5. Mr. Brockway

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what reply has been given to the Note from the Government of North Vietnam addressed to him as joint Chairman of the Geneva Agreement on Indo-China, protesting against the reinforcement of the United States military mission to South Vietnam.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. John Profumo)

None, Sir.

Mr. Brockway

Is it not time that steps were taken to try to clear up this chaos in Vietnam? Is it not the case that under both the Communist control of North Vietnam and the American control of South Vietnam the democratic principles for which we stand are being alike repudiated?

Mr. Profumo

if the North Vietnamese wish to contribute to the maintenance of peace in Indo-China, they should call off the brutal insurgency campaign which is being carried out against the South Vietnamese Government rather than make these constant complaints to the co-Chairmen.
