§ 14. Mr. Parkerasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons have been arrested in the three months ended 31st March, 1960, in the Dagenham, Barking, Ilford, and East Ham areas, respectively; and what percentages of these arrests, respectively, were for street betting.
§ Mr. VosperAs the reply consists of a table of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
§ Mr. ParkerWhile thanking the right hon. Gentleman for that reply, may I ask whether he is aware that there is a feeling in this area that there are far more cases of arrests for street betting taking place than in any other part of the Metropolitan Police area? Will he look into that to see whether it is so, and why?
§ Mr. VosperAs the hon. Member will see from the reply, the situation is rather alarming, but I suggest that it will be completely changed as a result of the Bill which recently left this House. I hope this problem will not arise in future.
§ The figures are as follows:
— | All Arrests | Street Betting | Street Betting Arrests as a percentage of all Arrests | |
Dagenham | … | 278 | 81 | 29.1 |
Barking | … | 109 | 21 | 19.2 |
Ilford | … | 201 | Nil | Nil |
East Ham | … | 194 | 20 | 10.3 |
