HC Deb 12 May 1960 vol 623 c597
9. Mr. Lipton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when the report of the Food Standards Committee on the composition of flour and bread will be published.

Mr. John Hare

The Committee's report is expected to be ready by the autumn. As the hon. Member knows, an interim report on "milk bread" was published in October last.

Mr. Lipton

Is our bread so doped with chemical of all kinds that, even after four years, the Food Standards Committee cannot decide what the standard of purity in our bread should be? Why on earth has it taken so long to deal with this very staple article of our diet?

Mr. Hare

I know the hon. Member is a particular expert on this subject, but I think that with the knowledge he has he realises it is a very complicated subject—

Mr. Lipton

Because of the dope.

Mr. Hare

—because of the many types of bread on the market and 'the technical and nutritional questions involved. The Committee has done a very good job and will be giving me the report by the autumn.
