HC Deb 09 March 1960 vol 619 cc411-2
26. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for Air at what distance from Fylingdales approaching objects will be identifiable with absolute certainty as ballistic missiles and will be distinguishable as such from, for instance, meteoric trails of ionisation, artificial satellites, or flocks of birds.

Mr. Ward

The distance at which missiles can be identified depends on their trajectory.

Mr. Driberg

With all respect, that does not answer the Question, does it? Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether there is any question of absolute certainty in this matter; and if there is not, is there not more peril than protection?

Mr. Ward

The process of identification, which is practically instantaneous, is also very certain.

Mr. Driberg

On a point of order. I beg to give notice, in view of the very unsatisfactory nature of the reply, that I shall raise the matter on the Adjournment.
