HC Deb 03 March 1960 vol 618 cc1398-9
11. Mr. Denzil Freeth

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will make a decision on the application for an increased tariff on imported tomatoes before the home-produced tomatoes come on the market in the spring.

Mr. Erroll

This application is under urgent consideration, but I am not in a position to say when a decision will be reached.

Mr. Freeth

Is my hon. Friend really convinced of the urgency of this case, and has he managed to inspire those who advise him so that he may come to a decision with an equal, or even greater, sense of urgency, since unless a decision on this tariff is reached within the next two months it will be of absolutely no use at all for the tomato crop of 1960?

Mr. Erroll

I am very glad to give an assurance to my hon. Friend that we are fully seized of this matter at both Ministerial and official levels.

Lieut. - Colonel Bromley - Davenport

Will my hon. Friend do all he can to prevent a glut of imported tomatoes flooding our markets just when our own growers are trying to sell their produce?

Mr. Erroll

I am sure that that is one of the points which will have been put forward by the interests concerned.
