§ 31. Mr. A. J. Irvineasked the President of the Board of Trade by what date he expects to be able to embark upon, and complete, his consultations with the chemical fertiliser industry on the implementation of the recommendations relating to the monopoly of potash contained in the recent report of the Monopolies Commission.
§ Mr. J. RodgersMeetings with United Kingdom interests concerned began this week. The Monopolies Commission's recommendation on potash will be one of the subjects for discussion. My right hon. Friend cannot forecast how long the discussions will take.
§ Mr. IrvineDoes the Parliamentary Secretary agree that the problem here appears to arise from the activities of an international cartel monopolising the supply of potash to this country, and that the solution of the problem lies in the discovery of alternative sources of supply? This would seem to be a matter in respect of which there was no valid excuse for delay.
§ Mr. RodgersI have some sympathy with the hon. Gentleman. In our discussions with Fison's, I.C.I. and others, we shall discuss further measures to utilise to the full the buying and bargaining power of the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. OramCan the Minister assure the House that the discussions which take place will not be so prolonged or abortive as those with the timber importers?
§ Mr. RodgersWe shall proceed with all possible speed.
