§ 31. Mr. Brewisasked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of graduates in arts and pure science, respectively, who entered teacher training colleges in the year 1959.
§ Mr. MaclaySix hundred and fifty-six arts graduates and 202 graduates in pure science, excluding graduates in applied science.
§ Mr. BrewisAm I not right in thinking that these figures show an increase on the previous year and are therefore reasonably encouraging?
§ Mr. MaclayI think that that is a correct assessment. The number of graduates in the arts rose by 49 and the number of graduates in pure science rose by 35 compared with the previous session, and this shows that progress has been made.
§ Miss HerbisonThe right hon. Gentleman will agree that the number is still too small and one could not possibly say that it is even reasonably satisfactory.
§ Mr. MaclayI do not think that any Secretary of State is ever reasonably satisfied about anything, although some conditions are better than they might be.
