HC Deb 01 March 1960 vol 618 cc1008-9
15. Mr. Ainsley

asked the Minister of Works if he will see that all Government offices use indigenous fuel supplies as a form of office heating.

Lord John Hope

I have been in touch with my right hon. Friend, the Minister of Power about the choice of fuel for heating Government buildings. Indigenous fuels are being and will be used wherever they can do the job as cheaply and as well as other fuels.

Mr. Ainsley

While thanking the noble Lord for that reply, may I ask whether he is aware that he is only following the precedent that has been set by other coal-producing countries and their Governments' decisions, as, for example, in Austria? Does the Minister realise that such a policy will safeguard our own national economy and will alleviate industrial and social upheaval in this country?

Lord John Hope

I hope very much that the hon. Member is right.
