HC Deb 28 July 1960 vol 627 c1831
10. Mr. Goodhart

asked the Minister of State for Commonwealth Relations what communication he has received regarding a proposal for a Commonwealth Festival of the Arts; and what action he is taking thereon.

Mr. R. Thompson

A memorandum about the proposal for a Commonwealth Arts Festival has been provided by the Chairman of the Committee. It has received careful consideration, and is still the subject of correspondence.

Mr. Goodhart

Is my right hon. Friend aware that there is much interest in the proposal put forward by Lord Balfour and Mr. Yehudi Menuhin and others? It would be a great pity if the proposal could not go forward because of lack of Government support.

Mr. Thompson

There are considerable implications in this, both financial and of co-operation with other Commonwealth Governments interested, but the matter is under active consideration.
