HC Deb 22 July 1960 vol 627 c1010
Mr. Barber

I beg to move, in page 45, line 7, leave out from the second "the" to "for" in line 12 and to insert words 'required by the Building Societies Acts to be sent to the registrar' there shall be substituted the words 'sent to the Chief Registrar of Friendly Societies or the registrar under or in pursuance of the Building Societies Acts, 1874 to 1960', and". This Amendment widens the scope of the offence in Section 22 of the Building Societies Act, 1894. At present, the offence relates to wilfully making a false statement in any document required to be sent to the Registrar by building societies. Therefore, it would cover false statements in the annual return, because that has to be made, but not false statements, for instance, in an application to the Registrar, which a society could make or not as it chose, for a relaxation of the 10 per cent. on special advances. I think the House will agree that that sort of application should be covered. That is the purpose of the Amendment.

Amendment agreed to.
