HC Deb 05 July 1960 vol 626 c204
13. Mr. Woodburn

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether there has been any change in afforestation policy in view of the modern estimates of future need for timber.

Mr. Maclay

No, Sir. There have been no changes of sufficient magnitude since the policy was reviewed in 1958 to justify a change in the planting programme then approved for the ten years from 1959 to 1968.

Mr. Woodburn

As there will probably be a decrease in the use of timber for props, and as the timber programme as originally forecast may not be required, is the Forestry Commission considering planting other types of tree and adjusting its planting programme to fit in with the needs of agriculture?

Mr. Maclay

All the changing demands for timber are taken into account in considering the long-term programmes of the Forestry Commission.
