§ 26. Mr. Teelingasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what consultations he has had with the French Government concerning a Channel tunnel; and when he expects to receive the report of the Channel Tunnel Study Group.
§ Mr. Selwyn LloydI believe that the International Study Group intend to send Her Majesty's Government a copy of their report in the near future. No worth-while discussions can take place with the French Government until this report has been studied.
§ Mr. Ellis SmithWill the Foreign Secretary give an undertaking that he will not encourage the proposal in view of the urgent needs of the British people for capital expenditure for housing and so on, which should come before a proposal of this kind?
§ Mr. LloydI certainly think that before a decision is taken in favour of the project all the relevant considerations should be taken into account, and I think that one of them is the matter to which the hon. Gentleman has referred.
