HC Deb 03 February 1960 vol 616 c985
43. Mr. Fernyhough

asked the Minister of Transport if, in view of the number unemployed in Jarrow and Hebburn, he will give permission for the work upon the approach roads to the proposed Tyne tunnel to commence immediately.

Mr. Hay

We are informed by the highway authorities concerned that work on the tunnel approach roads cannot be started until they have obtained fresh Parliamentary powers for the construction of the tunnel and the approach roads in accordance with their new plans. As the House will know, the councils have now deposited the necessary Bill.
