asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he has been notified of the proposed closing of a locomotive works at Stockton-on-Tees; and what action he is taking to find a suitable alternative tenant for this Government-financed factory.

Yes, Sir. My right hon. Friend is at present trying to find an alternative tenant.

Mr. Chetwynd

As this is a Government-financed factory, will the hon. Gentleman make sure that it does not lie idle after the present firm leaves it in February?

Mr. Macpherson

We cannot guarantee that at no time will it lie idle, but we shall certainly do our best.
