HC Deb 13 December 1960 vol 632 cc200-1
31. Mr. Steele

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many new jobs will be provided in Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven in the next 12 months.

Mr. N. Macpherson

My right hon. Friend is aware of several firms who are considering establishing themselves or expanding in the area, but as yet he can give no indication of the number of jobs they would be likely to provide or whether they would start recruiting before the end of 1961.

Mr. Steele

While that reply may be helpful, may I ask whether the hon. Gentleman is aware, in view of the Answer to the previous Question by his right hon. Friend, that there is a factory closing down in Alexandria—the United Turkey Red? If there is a shortage of labour in the cotton industry, why is it not possible to keep this factory employed in the industry so that this need can be met?

Mr. Macpherson

That is not a matter for my right hon. Friend. He cannot keep that industry going in Alexandria.
