§ 14. Mr. Hunterasked the Minister of Aviation what progress has been made in eliminating smell and smoke from jet aircraft when taking off from London Airport.
§ Mr. RipponThe emission of smoke on take-off is chiefly confined to the Boeing 707 Type 120, which uses water injection. Few aircraft of this type now operate at London Airport. Smell is a more difficult problem. It is being closely studied by airport authorities throughout the world, but no practical solution has yet been found.
§ Mr. HunterWill the Parliamentary Secretary bear in mind that smell and smoke constitute a real annoyance to residents around the airport, especially housewives? Will he continue, by research, to try to eliminate this nuisance altogether?
§ Mr. RipponWe will continue to do our best. I think we are dealing with smoke by the progressive elimination of the particular aircraft concerned. As far as smell is concerned, what we need is a sort of "Air Wick", but it has been difficult to devise this.
