HC Deb 06 December 1960 vol 631 cc1039-40
8. Mr. A. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on his recent talks with Mr. Robert Anderson, the United States Secretary of the Treasury, and Mr. Douglas Dillon, United States Secretary of State for Economic Affairs.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

I have nothing to add to my reply to the hon. Member for South Ayrshire (Mr. Emrys Hughes) on 29th November.

Mr. Lewis

Is the Chancellor aware that the American Treasury has always claimed that economic aid has been given, and will continue to be given, without any political or economic strings attached? Has his attention been drawn to the statement in The Times today, to the effect that the American Treasury is now issuing American aid on condition that it is not spent in Great Britain? Was that point discussed? If not, why not? What is the right hon. and learned Gentleman's reaction to it?

Mr. Lloyd

I am not aware of either of the propositions contained in the hon. Member's supplementary question.

Mr. Lewis

I will write to the Minister about it and show him.
