HC Deb 06 December 1960 vol 631 c1037
4. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the recession in the motor car industry, he will consider the relaxation of hire-purchase restrictions and a lowering of the Purchase Tax on cars.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

I have nothing to add to the replies given on 17th November by my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade relating to hire-purchase restrictions and by my hon. Friend the Economic Secretary to the Treasury relating to Purchase Tax on motor vehicles.

Mr. Henderson

Will not the Chancellor agree that the easing of the restrictions on hire-purchase might well tend to stimulate the home market for motor cars and thereby make a contribution to this very difficult situation?

Mr. Lloyd

I understand that there is to be a debate on these matters later this afternoon.
