HC Deb 06 December 1960 vol 631 cc1053-4
28. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he proposes to take to assist the motorcar industry to increase its export of cars to the under-developed countries of Africa and Asia.

The Minister of State, Board of Trade (Mr. F. J. Erroll)

The export services of the Department are always fully available to the motor-car industry in its efforts to expand its exports to all markets including the under-developed countries of Africa and Asia.

Mr. Henderson

Would the right hon. Gentleman agree that these underdeveloped areas of Asia and Africa constitute a very large potential market for our motor-car industry? Is not this a problem of taking steps to work out same positive means of helping the greater export of our motor cars to these areas?

Mr. Erroll

Yes. We are doing quite well in both Africa and Asia, but their ability to absorb British motor cars depends on the rate at which their standard of living rises.
