HC Deb 12 April 1960 vol 621 cc1059-60
11. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Minister of Works if he will consider removing the statue of George Washington from its site near the National Gallery to a site nearer Westminster.

Lord John Hope

No, Sir.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

Is the Minister aware that American visitors to this country do not understand why George Washington, the man who never told a lie, is kept so far from Westminster, and would he consider removing the statue nearer Downing Street or the Foreign Office so that their inhabitants might get inspiration at moments of difficulty?

Lord John Hope

I think that on the whole it is probably better to leave Washington where he is. He is only a little way down the road from George III, who has, in fact, turned his back on him.
