HC Deb 05 April 1960 vol 621 cc183-4
26. Dr. Summerskill

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what progress has been made in establishing a flying doctor service in the African territories where there is a special need for an emergency medical service.

Mr. Alport

Arrangements are being made for a survey party of the "Flying Doctor Service of Africa" organisation to visit Northern Nigeria, Kenya and Tanganyika to discuss with the Governments concerned the possibility of establishing flying doctor services in their territories.

Dr. Summerskill

I thank the Minister for that Answer, but can he say whether they are co-operating with the Australian flying doctor service, which has proved so successful?

Mr. Alport

I am afraid that I have no knowledge as to whether there is direct co-operation with the Australian authorities in this matter, but I am certain that it would be willingly forthcoming from the Australians if it were necessary. I think that I am right in saying that this proposal, which has a very romantic background, is, in fact, based on the experience they have already in Australia of operating a service of this sort.
