§ 12. Mr. F. M. Bennettasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when he expects Ferry Point Bridge, Bermuda, to be completed by the United States Government in accordance with their obligations.
§ Mr. AlportThe United States Government have informed Her Majesty's Government that, despite repeated efforts to have the necessary funds appropriated, Congressional consent has not yet been secured. Her Majesty's Government will, however, continue to press 177 for this to be obtained and for the bridge to be built as soon as possible.
§ Mr. BennettWhile grateful for what the Minister has said to indicate his interest, may I ask him to recall that the American Government made a solemn promise sixteen years ago that this bridge to provide a roadway for the inhabitants of Bermuda would be built and that over four years ago I received an assurance from his colleague that the American Government would then see their way to fulfilling their obligations? Can he give me any indication how long they will go on welshing on a deliberate and calculated policy?
§ Mr. AlportI cannot accept my hon. Friend's strictures upon the American Administration. No doubt they have some of the problems which face all Governments in obtaining Supply in certain cases. I agree with him that this case has aroused concern, and I can assure him that the Government will do their best to press upon the United States Government the importance which we attach to this problem.
