§ 31. Mr. Peytonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will introduce legislation to provide, that death duties shall only be payable on funds which have been received by executors.
§ Sir E. BoyleI am not quite clear what my hon. Friend has in mind, but I shall be glad to consider any points he cares to put to me.
§ Mr. PeytonI shall be only too glad to make my point absolutely clear to my right hon. Friend. What I have in mind is a really deplorable and rather too literal example of the State having its cake and eating it. Will my right hon. Friend give me the assurance that, when I have made it absolutely clear, executors will not be called upon to pay death duties on funds which are not in their hands and over which they have no control?
§ Sir E. BoyleI had better see the cake before commenting on it. If there is any case my hon. Friend would like to bring to my attention, I can assure him that I will consider it carefully.
