§ 1. Mr. Hector Hughesasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the Government policy relating to the admission of the People's Republic of China to a seat on the Council of the United Nations Organisation.
§ The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Selwyn Lloyd)Her Majesty's Government's policy on this matter remains as frequently stated in this House and elsewhere.
§ Mr. HughesDoes not the Secretary of State think that this very important matter is worthy of a more detailed Answer, and does he not agree that, having regard to the disquieting policy of China on the Indian border, never was it more important that China should be brought within the comity of civilised nations than at present? Will the right hon. and learned Gentleman take steps to bring that about?
§ Mr. LloydI appreciate the importance of the matter which the hon. and learned Gentleman has raised, but Her Majesty's Government's position has been stated at length on this matter before, and I have nothing to add.
