HC Deb 03 November 1959 vol 612 c847
34. Mr. Ross

asked the President of the Board of Trade how many new projects with the number of employment places they will provide, have been introduced into Ayrshire in the last twelve months.

Mr. Maudling

Since 1st November, 1958, five projects have been completed in Ayrshire which should provide employment for 280 people. In addition, four projects are under construction or have been approved, which should provide 355 jobs.

Mr. Ross

As figures given yesterday showed an increase in unemployment of over 1,000 in the period of the last month, is the President of the Board of Trade satisfied that his predecessor and his minions have been sufficiently organised to cope with the problem, and have done enough to satisfy the people of Ayrshire that they are really interested in this question?

Mr. Maudling

I think that all has been done that could be done under existing legislation. It is because we think that the legislation could be improved that we have recently presented a Bill to do so.
