HC Deb 12 May 1959 vol 605 cc1029-30
24. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is now in a position to make a further statement about the completion and opening of the new Bridge of Don, Aberdeen; and what are his plans in connection with the roads leading to it from the north and south, respectively.

Mr. N. Macpherson

Her Majesty the Queen Mother has graciously agreed to open the reconstructed Bridge of Don on Monday, 25th May.

When schemes at present in progress have been completed, nine miles of the trunk road to the north of the bridge will have been reconstructed to modern standards; the roads south of the bridge are the responsibility of Aberdeen Town Council as highway authority.

Mr. Hughes

Does the Minister realise that this bridge and the roads which serve it are very important for the whole northeast of Scotland? Will he plan the roads in accordance with the great necessities of that region?

Mr. Macpherson

The needs of the region will certainly be considered. Our view at present, however, is that in the case of the roads beyond the junction with A.975, where the reconstructed section of the road ends, there is not the same need for comprehensive improvements.
