HC Deb 07 May 1959 vol 605 c562
47. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Prime Minister what was the nature of the proposals for dealing with unemployment in Scotland suggested to him at his meeting with the delegation from the Scottish Trades Union Congress on 2nd May; and what was the nature of his reply.

The Prime Minister

The delegation urged the need for special Government measures to reduce Scotland's dependence on the heavy industries and to attract new expanding industries. I described what had already been achieved in these directions and promised to consider certain points made by the delegation.

Mr. Hughes

Did not the Scottish T.U.C. convince the Prime Minister that a good deal of this unemployment is due to the lack of planning in Government policy?

The Prime Minister

Far from convincing me, the Scottish T.U.C. did not even put up that proposition.
